West Virginia State Flag
According to an article recently published on "The Street"1 , West Virginia is ranked as the dumbest state in America. This information was pulled from from research compiled on the website infoplease.com and is based on the percent of population with a bachelors degree or higher. The article explains that there is a correlation between the percentage of individuals with higher education and the level of poverty in a state. According to the article West Virginia's statistics are as follows:
%of Population With Bachelor's Degrees: 17.3%
Median Household Income (2012): $40,196 (ranked 48th in US)
Average SAT Score (2013): 1513
The article then goes on to state how that education is also relevant to the types of jobs in an area. The states with larger amounts of jobs that don't require higher education results in a lower percentage of residents pursuing higher education. Coal mining, WV's largest industry accounted for $2.9 billion in export last year and employs 30,000 West Virginians.
In my experience just because an individual has a college degree does not neccessarily mean they are more intelligent than someone without one. I have known people in my life that had a nice education but was unable to take that knowledge and put it to any practical use. It doesn't matter if you are an expert on Einsteins' Theory of Relativity if you aren't capable to walk across the street by yourself.
MTV's Series Buck Wild followed a group of friends from Sissonville WV
WV often gets portrayed in hollywood and the media as being full of stupid, inbred hillbillies thanks to the likes of "Buck Wild" and "The Wild and Wonderful Whites of WV". However, the state is seldom recognized for the accomplishments of its residents, nor the beauty and heritage contained in its mountains. This stigmata will continue to haunt the residents of this wonderful state until we decide to do something about it.
